In loving memory of Jonathan Douglas Talbott.

  March 6, 1991 to August 21, 2015

Without you, I never would have finished a book.

  County Club, Washington DC

Upon entering the club, I looked around to see if my guests had arrived for the meeting. Over in the corner, I see Theodore Truman sitting at a table with a drink and watching the game. So I head over to his table to talk.

"Hello, I am Ben Wilson. I am glad that you you accepted my invitation, and think you will find it interesting. Since the conference room is all set up, let's wait for everyone there. The others should arriving soon, and then we can get started."

Theo, "I would be happy to join you. Your letter sounded intriguing, and curiosity got the better of me, so here I am."

"Just a moment Theo while I let our host Andre Damboise know, to send the rest the group to the conference room." Turning to the Andre, "Please send the rest of my guests to the meeting room when they arrive."

Andre, "I would be happy too, Mr. Wilson."

  "Thank you."

"Theo besides the meeting, I decided to have a meal to celebrate our great adventure. So what do you think of the conference room set up?"

"It is probably the most eloquent and useful conference room I have seen. I am amazed at the size of the conference table. How many people does it seat?" Said Theo.

"I had the club set up the table for 20 people, but it could hold 30. The lilacs are from the clubs gardens and set things off nicely with the the purple color. The view of the club gardens is the reason, I chose this room. Please feel free to refresh your drink at the bar while we wait for the other invitees."

As Theo and I talked, the room was slowly filling up with other company executives. From my seat, I could see most of the people invited were attending the meeting. Glancing at the grandfather clock, I noticed it was time for the meeting to start.

Clearing my throat, "For those that do not you know me, I am Ben Wilson and appreciate you coming to this meeting today. The letters that you received were a little mysterious and intentionally short on details. It is exciting that so many of you decided to accept my invitation today and I guarantee you will not be disappointed. I would like to introduce you to the people that are going to be the core of our group. Theo Truman of Seaward Housing and Engineering, Jackie Van Swanson of Infinity Metals and Jim Booker." As I introduced them they each stood up.

"This meeting will take about an hour, and then dinner will be provided. So let's get right down to business.

The reason we are here today is that over the last few years we have seen a steady decline in the quality of living around the world. The population is approaching 8 billion people, and we are running out of ways to produce food and build housing for the masses. Additionally, for many of them, there is no way to improve their lives or even a possibility of a job. I believe that the people in this room can make a dramatic impact on the living conditions and lives of the people. You may have noticed that most of the people in this room represent companies in the aerospace industries. The rest of the industries in one way or another provide service or support to those companies.

To enhance the quality of life, the world needs more resources and a release valve for the population. What I propose is that by combining our resources and working together, is to create a stable space community.

Over the last year, Humanity Holdings has researched what it would take to resolve the coming resource shortages and avert an economic disaster. A plan to accomplish this was developed and broken down into four phases.

Phase 1 - Create a sustainable space colony and associated industries.

Phase 2 - Mine the moon and asteroid belt for materials and return them to earth.

Phase 3 - Construct large habitats in space to house more people and become a space society.

Phase 4 - Build a space elevator to provide an economical way to get physical resources and people to and from space.

Granted each of these, as a bullet point, is rather simplistic. The folder in front of each you has a complete breakdown of the steps to accomplish each of the 4 phases.

With our resources and technology, we can bring these plans to fruition. For example – Theo's company manufactures Sea habitats that are lightweight, fully enclosed and self-sustainable. These will be adapted and scaled up to create the space colonies habits.

Due to the level of complexity the endeavor requires, my company Humanity Holdings has set up a non-profit organization to manage and control the development of the space colony. It will also be aggressively working on establishing a framework for governance in space based upon individual freedoms and responsibility.

The name of the organization is "Space Development Holdings" or "SDH" for short. It will be governed by a 5 member board of directors. Addendum A of the Plan has all the information regarding the organization including the bylaws. I would like to mention that the board of directors is elected by the members of the organization.

For the initial investment, I have personally donated One Billion dollars. Additionally, Humanity Holdings has placed essential patents related to space in a trust to provide future funding. We are asking each of you and the companies you represent to invest in the future of humanity.

The SDH has been divided into six departments to facilitate its charter. They are administrative, space governance, transportation, materials, habitats, and communications. The departments will be updated as needed. However, I believe the majority of things will fall into these six categories.

Bear in mind, this is an investment in humanity and the future. The companies involved will continue to operate their businesses and will not be required to give up any rights. As a member, your companies products and or services will be included in developing space. SDH will provide services that help to integrate your products and services into space industries and assure that the members are a part of the next great expansion of mankind.

Please take the next few minutes to think about what you have heard and to discuss it amongst yourselves and whether you are to be inv
olved or not. On the table in front of each of you, we have included a contract for SDH and pledges for individuals and corporations to support the organization. Feel free to read through them, and to discuss with your board of directors. Since this is a serious decision, I do not expect any of you to sign them today but would request that within a week, you let us know if you want to be involved.

Please enjoy the meal which will be served momentarily."

Theo, "Ben, I had no idea that you were going to include me in your presentation, although I do think it is an interesting idea. You do know that the habitats I build are spherical?"

"Yes I know, but I believe that they can be scaled up to 250 or Even 1000 feet per sphere. We looked extensively at the materials that you are using to build the Sea habitats and found that they could be readily adapted and scaled for space construction. Part of the materials assessment was specifically the clarity and ease of recycling."

Ben’s office, Humanity Holdings, St. Louis MO.

"Welcome," Ben said to James, Jackie, and Theodore, "I thought it was the time we got together and to see what input you have for the project."

Jackie walks over to the windows and says, "While skyscrapers make me nervous, this is sure some view you have of St. Louis. Is that the Arch, I see over there?"

"Yes, that is the Arch of St. Louis also known as the "Gateway to the West. I look out this window every day and think of what it represents. To those who traveled west, it was a new beginning and an exciting future.

Since this is going to be a working meeting, let me give you a rundown of some of the features of my office.

On the south wall, I have a large LCD monitor that shows company locations and data that can be switched over to displaying data the current project. In front of that is my control chair, it allows me to switch between working from the LCD monitor and the desk. The entire desktop is a display that enables me to get most of my work done without cluttering things up. Currently, the desktop is configured with additional virtual keyboards and touch pads for your use during this meeting.

I took the liberty of having my assistant prepare some coffee and snacks for the meeting, so help yourselves. Are you guys ready to get to work?"

"Yes." Replied Jackie as she walked over to the counter and grabbed some coffee and a danish.

Theodore, "Jackie, please pour a cup for me, it will help me to think better."

"The document you see on my desk is an outline of Space Development Holdings current status. As you know, the six areas of development are administrative, space governance, transportation, materials, habitats, and communications. We are going to cover all six areas in no given order today. Theodore, what are your thoughts regarding habitat development?"

"Well since the meeting I have been giving considerable thought as to what is needed for the habitats and how to construct them in space," said Theodore. "I have been able to simplify the construction in space by basically blowing a giant bubble. As the material cools, the liquid in the material evaporates as it solidifies. Initially, I had a problem with how to incorporate an airlock. The solution was to add an external tube for the airlock. To simplify construction, the bubble expansion process was changed to create a tube instead of a bubble. Then just remove one end and attach to the outside of the habitat bubble. That is a simple matter of heating up the surfaces and welding them together with the same material. Lastly, the portion of the habitat bubble that is inside the tube is cut out, and seals added to form a hatch. The other end of the tube is either converted to a hatch or attached to another habitat sphere.

Right after the sphere is blown an environmental unit is inserted. The unit consists of four tanks of water, air, waste recycling, and storage. In smaller spheres, it also provides the base for the floor. Since the material is at this time, somewhat transparent, we are going to have to either change that or find a way to block out the sun."

"I can see how that would be a problem with the sun heating up the oxygen in the sphere. I look forward to seeing what your answer is to that problem," said Ben. "How has it been going with the companies that will provide the equipment?" While Theodore was talking, I brought up an engineering blueprint of the sphere, and it was an elegant and straightforward design.

Theodore, "There have been some hiccups, but the majority of it has been going well. The bubble blowing material is not much different than what I have been purchasing from my current suppliers. The suppliers have indicated that they can provide the materials needed without any problems and in the quantities, we will need. I have had some issues with the manufacturer of the environmental platform in regards to quality. To save on space and weight the recycling and waste storage compartments are built into the platform. I may have to change manufacturers on that. The mechanical and electrical units that are attached to the platform seem to be working to specifications. We will not be able to tell until the unit is assembled and tested. Additionally, everything is modular to allow for parts replacement as needed.

"Jackie, what do you have for me?" said Ben.

Jackie, "There are several parts to the asteroid mining project. The first is the vehicle to get to the asteroid, Second is the mining of the asteroid, and the third is the returning of the materials to earth.

The vehicle design to get to the asteroid's and mining units has been completed, and we are almost ready with the first vehicle. The tests should be able to start soon. The initial test will be of propulsion and guidance. The test will be done in earth orbit by rendezvousing with defunct satellites. Since we know the materials that went into constructing the satellites, it makes the testing and calibration of the laser spectrograph simpler and more accurate. We have contracted with the owners of the satellites to remove them. After the tests, we will use the vehicle to collect the materials that the satellite was made of. The laser technology to mine the asteroid is well-developed. The basic concept is that a laser vaporizes asteroid materials and then a centrifuge separates the different elements by weight. We have extensively tested the system using samples of lunar materials, and it works quite well.

To launch the materials back to earth we will be using a rail-gun. The initial rail-gun will consist of the vehicles external shell, some coils and power from the vehicles nuclear reactor. The construction portion of the mining vehicle will, later on, construct a larger rail-gun and solar cells for power from mined materials.

To catch the materials once they reach the earth area, we have revived an old concept. It is called a catcher. It was initially designed to catch materials launched up from the moon to build space habitats.

The help we have been getting from SDH has helped immensely, and we are progressing at a quicker pace. We have not had the issues that Theo has had with his development."

"It does sound like both areas are moving along at a good pace," said Ben. "Now let me give you a rundown on the transportation portion of the project.

Currently, Jane's launch services have two types of lifters for transportation. They are designated as "Material" and "Bulk Cargo" lifters. A third lifter is in development that falls between the two. For cargo that does not fall within the specifications of the current lifters, we will be contracting out to them for what I call specialty launches.

The materials lifter has multiple configurations for different types of cargo. The configuration changes are done by switching out cargo bays. Currently, we have cargo bays for liquids, gasses, solids, and manufactured components. The bays are designed to be easily switched out and once in orbit can be removed, and the lifter returned to earth.

The cargo lifter is a little bit different. It again has several different bays that can be switched out for different configurations. One bay is designed for crew and can transport up to 250 people at a time and the second Bay is for cargo that must be manufactured on earth and transported up to into orbit. For example, recently we used it to move the electromagnetic solar shield generator into orbit. A third smaller passenger lifter is currently being built,
and the prototype will launch within six months. The single launch vehicle can carry up to 20 passengers. The single launch vehicle is designed to be re-purposed once in orbit. It this allowed us to simplify the design and manufacture of the lifter. To cut costs, the small passenger lifter was designed to have many systems in common with the Cargo lifter. Some of those are navigation, communications, and rocket engines."

Currently, we have 10 of the material lifters, with an additional two coming on-line in six months, four bulk cargo lifters and 5 of the passenger lifters under construction.

Ben, "Now for a change of topic, SDH administration has formed me that they are making progress on the space governance initiative. A committee of nine has been set up that is developing the overall framework that will be used to govern. The ninth member is a representative of SDH and has final veto over any part of the process.

Overall, the committee at this point has elected to take parts of the United States Constitution and add additional controls to them. The basic outline is again a checks and balances system with a court, executive branch and congressional branch. Each branch of the government will have strict guidelines that they cannot violate. I don't think that they really grasp the distances and communication time lags that space involves. They also have some interesting ideas for other controls that apply to safety in a space environment.

Next communications; we have come up with several different ideas. The space station is going to use a modified cell tower system to provide communications for both voice and data. A standard 4G cell system provides a radius of 10 miles which is well within the communication needs of the space colony. Longer distance will need to use other technologies like lasers, and satellite up links. We are also implementing a series of security measures and encryption to provide privacy for our citizens and companies. The security system will be known as the "secure one" and will be released shortly. We have based it on a cell application.

SDH has also recruited some companies to work on advanced construction materials for space applications. These will be important when we get to building the space elevator for phase 4. There are 3 or 4 materials that could work but need some further development. There are several plans for space elevator already but an idea that someone in South Dakota came up with may simplify the engineering and bring down the cost.
